June 20, 2007

Another day in the life of this family. Less than 10 days left and I wanted to go to a certain handicrafts shop to buy some stuff to take back home. The plan this morning was to take the baby to the doctor (he has a really bad diaper rash caused by disposable diapers during our trip that has turned into a bacterial infection). After we came home to drop off the baby, we were supposed to go to this shop. We got home and everyone decides to eat lunch first. Fine, we can go after lunch, no problem. Then they all got to talking. What if we run into a certain person we have not yet called on, who lives near that shop? What if they get offended? Maybe we should call on them and then go to the shop. Whatever. But if we call on them it will turn into a big ordeal lasting longer than we want. There were some more what if’s that I didn’t catch in Tamil. Everyone had something to say about it and it got heated. Finally my father in law, who was supposed to take us to the shop, gets ready to leave to go back to his house which is near the shop. He said that the new plan is to wait until next week to visit this shop. I just about hit the roof. All because we might run into some people. I told them I was going to the shop if I had to take an autorickshaw myself. My father in law left anyway. The new plan is that he will drive back to get us when we are ready to leave for the shop and then he’s not going to hang around because those people might spot his car, and we will call him when we are finished shopping and he will drive us home.

I don’t have my sling yet, either.

On the bright side, it’s mango season, and the colossal ancient mango tree in the front of the in law’s house is in full production. They are so juicy and delicious, sweeter than candy. The ripest ones, we just slice them into three parts (the seed part in the middle) and use spoons to eat it right out of the skin like pudding. The ones that are about a day away from perfect ripeness are also really good sliced into squares, then turned inside out and devoured just like that.

Those mangoes look SO delicious! In Thailand they have green mangoes, crunchy and SWEET, believe it or not... Dip it into this chili-salt-sugar mix and it's addictive. We eat a lot of mangoes in my family - but in CA they're Mexican grown, but still tasty.

Sorry about the shopping trip. Tell us what ended up happening with that. I'm so independently minded, I WOULD have taken that autorickshaw myself, or walked if it was within walking distance.
